A buddy pass is one way to get discounted airfare. With it, you can fly to exotic places for a fraction of regular price. But if you don’t know what you’re getting into, the only place that you’ll get familiar with is the airport terminal. Travel smart by learning the ‘ins and outs’ of flying with a buddy pass. How does a buddy pass work? Airline employees receive reduced airfare vouchers for leisure travel that they can give to family and friends. A buddy pass is good for a one-time ticket for a one-way or round-trip. But don’t run to a seat just yet, as a buddy pass holder you are not guaranteed a seat, instead you are placed on a standby list of potential passengers competing for available seating after all of the confirmed passengers board. The standby list is organized by priority, first offering available seats to regular-fare passengers, followed by employees, their parents, spouses, retired employees and THEN buddy pass holders. Buddy passes have S4 priority which is the lowest priority on the standby list. Airline staff and friends are prioritized within their sub-category via the employee’s starting date of employment. And open seats are assigned via [...]

Yvonne Zagermann is one of the most well-known (and sexiest) bloggers in the travel media industry and we absolutely love the way she wears her headscarves wherever she goes. Get her signature travel look with some of our favorite fashion head scarves. You don’t have to be religious, conservative or cold to rock a headscarf (or head wrap, as some like to call it). In fact, Yvonne Zagermann of JustTravelous.com proves that head scarves can be a bold fashion statement that add a little creativity to your nomadic, boho style. Moreover, head wraps can be a convenience, even savior, when the weather at your destination is rather shitty, but you still would like to post a decent photo on instagram. So pack at least one when you travel to avoid that disastrous moment when you find out your flat iron isn’t compatible with the voltage in Timbuktu. Here are some of NN‘s picks for stylish head scarves, wraps and bands… Why we like it: The butterfly is a classic representation of travel and curiosity. And the vibrant colors add a fashionable touch to these wide headbands. How [...]

Follow Canadian-Cambodian street artist Fonki, as he returns to Cambodia to see how street art and hip hop scene are revitalizing youth culture 30 years after the war. Super dope. Photo via Fatcap.com The once rich and thriving Cambodian culture was decimated and eliminated from the history books by the barbaric Khmer Rouge during the genocide of the 1970’s. 30 years after the genocide, the Cambodian diaspora’s young, coming from all over the world, are returning to the motherland and introducing hip-hop and street art culture to help revitalize the fractured Khmer culture. These Cambodian youths are trying to inspire the post-genocide generation to take ownership of their future. In their quest, they are claiming back the artistic and cultural heritage of their ancestors, enriching it with contemporary techniques and influences. Through their dedicated work, these young people are trying to heal Cambodia. The Roots Remain follows the story of Canadian-raised graffiti artist Fonki, as he returns to his ancestral Cambodia to reunite with his family and to meet with other leaders in Cambodia’s growing hip-hop and graffiti community. Utilizing Cambodian film archives, as well as new original footage, the film chronicles the heartbreak of FONKi’s family during the [...]

The “most awesome festival in the world”, is also the most radical human experiments in community and self-expression. If you can’t make it to Nevada, here’s a list of ‘burn’ festivals around the world. Photo by Duncan Rawlinson For those who have ever been to Burning Man or any other ‘burn festival’, explaining to a ‘burn virgin’ (as newcomers are so affectionately called) is a difficult, if not damn near impossible, concept to convey. It is perhaps because there has never been another community arts festival like it. Burning Man is a real-life human experiment in creativity and self-expression. There are no celebrity headliners, no Vip tickets, no ten-dollar Bud lights- absolutely nothing can be bought or sold. There are no attendees, only participants who are expected to completely share, be and rely on themselves (hence the crazy costumes and, er, nudity). Burning Man is a celebration of freedom where the participants live out their deepest fantasy as to who they are and how they see themselves within this temporary community. Don’t look to be entertained, because you are the entertainment. Sound a bit too abstract? That’s partly because the whole idea is indeed abstract, guided only by the [...]

It’s time to tear down that old, busted map that you dare call a wall design and add some style to your space. Without making your place look like a souvenir shop, there are simple options to display your wanderlust lifestyle. This typography map is one of many wall-solutions for the travel enthusiast who isn’t really the arts-and crafts type. Check out the ideas listed below for quick ways to bring the world into your home. A travel frame is one way to revive memories that you’ve collected over the years. Think of a theme, pick a background and compile foreign ticket stubs, city-guides and other travel memorabilia for your hanging time-capsule. A pair of these custom-filled frames also make a perfect gift for inspiring and current travel friends. (tocofi.com) Another alternative to the hanging-map decor is to make use of the souvenir coins that you bring back from trips. Once you find a frame that works, fill it up with different currencies, put a drop of glue on the back of each coin, close it up, flip it over and let it dry. Soon thereafter, your coin art will be ready for display. The key [...]
